I always think of myself as “not very good at art”. Although, I took the digital photography class, advanced photography class (twice!), and the beginning watercolor class at the high school and it has improved my art skills tremendously. I have always wanted to become better at art and the photography and watercolor classes were a huge help. More specifically, I would like to become a better photographer. I love taking photos and editing them but there is still a lot I could improve on. I worked on improving my skills in my portfolio.
In my advanced photography portfolio you may notice that there is a theme, the theme is neutral color and low saturated/contrasted photos. All of my photos are yellow or tan hued with not much other color in them. I took some portrait photos and some landscape photos, which was a challenge for me. I typically only take portrait photos, so it was fun to do something a little different. I edited all of my photos in Lightroom and used mostly the same techniques for all of them. I turned down the saturation and contrast and then I brightened the photos. Sometimes I would turn up the yellow hue to ensure the neutral theme. One of my favorite photos is the one of the construction on the house. That one was easy to edit because the plywood set the whole neutral color theme. Another favorite photo of mine is the portrait of my friend, Emma, in the corn maze. That also didn’t require much editing because of the corn and her blonde hair. I noticed that even without my portfolio theme, I gravitate towards more neutral colored settings. In my portfolio I am most proud of how I have grown as a photographer. I learned how to take better portrait photos, take landscape photos and to edit more professionally. My personal style is parallel to my portfolio. I noticed that every time I edit a photo my go to techniques are to turn down saturation and contrast. For example, my Instagram feed is very similar, if not the same, as the theme of my photography portfolio.
Art has so much meaning and each person could find a different meaning for the same piece. I love art because I can see the life and work put in to it. I love to create art because my piece could mean a lot to someone just like it means a lot to me. I can also put whatever I want into my art; I love the feeling of being able to have free reign when I create. Art is a really good balance for me. I take pretty rigorous classes and the art classes I take are the perfect balance to make my day good. I will continue to take art classes in the future because I love having an hour to create.
